Although problems are rare when it comes to septic tanks, they do need pumping out and cleaning regularly if they're going to remain in top condition. But another factor you need to consider is the weather, including heavy rainfall. In this blog, we will be answering the common question, can rain flood your septic tank?
The simple and straightforward answer is yes, rain can flood your septic tank. It usually only happens during periods of heavy rainfall because this oversaturates the soil, reducing the drain field's ability to release liquid, or effluents, into the ground. This results in dangerous levels of liquid filling up in the tank because treated wastewater cannot be emptied from it, meaning effluent gets trapped and could flow backwards. Then, more waste enters into the tank from your home, resulting in your septic tank becoming too full. Rain can also enter your septic tank if it's not sealed properly.
Normally, when water levels in the surrounding soil are normal, effluent can drain into it, so there is no excess buildup. But if water cannot flow out of the septic tank system, it will eventually back up into the drains and toilets in your home, making an unpleasant mess! A flooded drain field can also lead to sewage that is untreated flowing into the groundwater and local streams, putting them at serious risk of contamination.
Flooded tank symptoms are similar to those of a tank that needs pumping or has a clogged pipe, so if you encounter one of these problems and have experienced heavy rain recently, there is a strong chance that rain has flooded your septic tank.
Some of the telltale signs can be drains in the house draining slowly or gurgling a lot, or water backing up into the floor drains of your property. You may also be able to see that the area surrounding the tank is water-logged.
