How To Tell If Your Septic Tank Is Full

August 3, 2022

If you have a septic tank, it's extremely important that you regularly empty it. When a septic tank becomes too full, the build-up of waste will eventually clog the system, leading to more serious issues. Luckily, there are some tell-tale signs to look out for that may be telling you your septic tank needs to be emptied, and we've listed a few of them below.

1. Pooling water

The first thing to look out for is pooling water in the area where your septic tank is kept. This can be one of the most obvious signs that your septic tank is overflowing and needs to be emptied.

Since your tank has more than likely reached full capacity, it could also mean that solid water is blocking the system, forcing liquid up and causing it to pool over.

2. The drains in your home are running slowly

Another sign that your septic tank is full is when you notice that the drains in your home are running slowly. This means the sewage from your home is backing up into the drains and causing blockages, preventing wastewater from freely flowing away.

The septic tank is the first line of defence against sewage backups, so it’s crucial that your septic tank is working to allow it to do this important job around the clock.

3. Odours

Since all the waste from your home eventually makes its way into your septic tank, if it's not working properly, you will definitely not be able to miss the smell.

If you start to find your septic tank is emitting a smell or maybe your neighbours inform you of it, this may be a sign your tank is full and needs to be treated immediately.

4. Sewage backup

If you're seeing sewage backup into your home, this is a clear sign that the septic tank is full and needs to be pumped. This can be dangerous if not addressed immediately and may also result in significant repair costs.

Additionally, this problem could indicate a more serious underlying issue with your system, so make sure to get it serviced by a professional as soon as possible.
